(A)Political January 25th

Good morning everyone,

Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the 47th President of The United States. He’s certainly hit the ground running.

The most remarkable return to politics in US history has been capped off with Trump’s return to the oval, and we’re here to break it down. After JD Vance cast a tiebreaking vote, Pete Hegseth has officially been confirmed as the next Secretary Of Defense in a late vote last night. Immediate action has been taken at the US southern border, as an additional 1,500 troops have been dispatched to deal with the exportation of illegal immigrants, as well as erect barriers along the border.

Trump Returns Defiantly

Under the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump took the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States, marking what he called the beginning of "America's golden age." The ceremony, moved indoors due to a polar vortex that sent temperatures plummeting, witnessed a convergence of power that’s been a rarity in recent memory. The three wealthiest men in the world—Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg—sat alongside Supreme Court justices, foreign dignitaries, and Trump's new cabinet of devoted loyalists.

The scene painted a stark contrast to Trump's first inauguration. This time, there was no doubt about his grip on the Republican Party or his vision for America. As outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Joe Biden watched with stoic expressions, Trump delivered an inaugural address that promised swift and sweeping changes to the American political landscape.

A Path Through Adversity

Trump's return to power came after overcoming extraordinary obstacles, including multiple legal prosecutions and two assassination attempts. During his address, he referenced a near-fatal incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he emerged bloodied but defiant, pumping his fist and shouting "Fight, fight, fight!" after Secret Service agents shielded him from an attacker. "I felt then and believe even more so now," Trump declared, "that my life was saved for a reason; I was saved by God to make America great again."

The New Political Landscape

Trump's return to power reflects a defined change of sentiment in American cultural and political dynamics. Similar in shape of his first term, he now commands a Republican majority in both chambers of Congress. The corporate world, too, has shifted—the same tech CEOs who once banned Trump from their platforms now sat in the front row of his inauguration.

The changing tide extends beyond politics. Conservative values have gained ground in the culture war, with corporations and government agencies increasingly abandoning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. As Musk, who will reportedly work from a West Wing office, declared at the inauguration, "This was no ordinary victory. This was a fork in the road of human civilization."

Bold Foreign Policy Declarations

In his inaugural address, Trump outlined an ambitious foreign policy agenda that included plans to reclaim the Panama Canal and rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America." He spoke of pursuing "manifest destiny into the stars," predicting an American flag would soon be planted on Martian soil. These declarations, while bold, signaled Trump's intention to reassert American dominance on both terrestrial and cosmic frontiers.

The Last Acts of the Biden Era

As Trump assumed power, the final hours of the Biden presidency were marked by significant actions of their own. Biden issued a series of preemptive pardons to key figures who had opposed Trump, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley, and members of the January 6th Committee. The pardons also extended to several Biden family members, including his brother James, citing "unrelenting attacks and threats."

A Symbolic Transfer

Despite the underlying tensions, both sides maintained the traditions of the peaceful transfer of power. "Welcome home," Biden told Trump and the new first lady during their morning White House meeting. The gesture carried particular weight given that the ceremony took place in the same building where Trump supporters had protested the certification of the 2020 election results four years earlier.

The ceremony concluded with an unplanned but poignant moment when country singer Carrie Underwood, faced with technical difficulties during her scheduled performance, led an impromptu a cappella rendition of "America the Beautiful." The spontaneous singing united the assembly in a rare moment of harmony, as nearly the whole of government joined in the patriotic chorus.

Looking Ahead

Trump's second presidency begins with both advantages and challenges his first term lacked. He enters office with a supportive Congress, a transformed Republican Party, and a cultural landscape increasingly receptive to his vision. However, legal challenges to his agenda emerged within hours of his taking the oath, with four groups filing lawsuits against the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president marks not just a personal political comeback but potentially a broader realignment of American politics and culture. As the new administration begins implementing its agenda, the country enters what Trump called "Liberation Day"—a moment that promises to either fulfill his vision of American renewal or deepen the nation's existing divisions.

The immediate future will test whether Trump can translate his electoral mandate into lasting change, as he attempts to fundamentally reshape American policy on everything from immigration to space exploration. With his declaration that "America's decline is over," Trump has set high expectations for his second term—expectations that will begin to be tested from his very first day in office.
